I am waiting in cash right now as I am wanting to see a pullback in the US equities (DOW). The weekly reversal at 26769.2 has not been elected.
My broker Oanda will charge me a lot in daily interest to long or short the DOW... Do you have a way to avoid paying daily interest for taking positions in the DOW?
For me I am planning to open an account with interactive broker to directly buy the stocks so that holding a long position in US stocks won't cost me much
[quote="bcho018"] How are you planning to long the DOW?
I use ETFs. I live in Canada and their a number I can trade in CAD, but also I carry USD so I trade DIA ETF as an example
I used Interactive brokers in the past and was very happy with their low commission. I used to place about 20 trades a day. So $1 a trade was worthwhile. My trading style has changed. I now play the overall markets with a swing/position trade style. Holding trades for a few months. As Armstrong has stated, "fewer trades are more profitable in the long wrong". Commission can really eat away at your profits. Plus the stress of in and out in and out leads to sleepless nights
I've looked into leveraged ETFs such as DDM and found this;
'For those that don't mind the volatility, they may be a good option. As leveraged ETFs compound daily, violability drag can dramatically reduce returns. For all those disbelievers, here is an interesting article calculating returns based on daily compounding of different indexes at different levels of leverage. For those who don't wish to read the article, the conclusion is that x2 leverage is the optimum level of leverage for the best returns over the long term. Here's a link to the article for those interested:
The next level up would be to purchase LEAP options on the DOW. Deep in the money - Erwin Pletsch recommended them in the 2016 WEC conference Socrates workshop which I used to be able to watch online.. I am not a trader so I'm still learning about them.
Thanks for all the info. I will seek to open an account with IB. Right now I have open positions in my current broker. I have to close them before I move.
